When Light & Shadows Come Out To Play – 10/2/08

Everywhere I’ve been going lately, I’ve been looking for good light. Is it miraculous that it has taken me more than seventeen years to realize how beautiful light is, how much it changes the way things appear, how it is an alembic of shadows and darkness in its own right?

On my way back from the photo lab this afternoon, I got chilly. I was wearing my shark shirt and shorts in 60 degree weather with a wind chill factor (that’s a nice day, especially when compared to this past week). I was also on the phone with my dad. So I went up to the observatory, a small space on the “sixth” floor of Weld which would double nicely as an art studio (but is more frequently used as a make-out spot or for alcohol relief), but which doubled for me, today, as a sun room (it has nice large windows). As I made my way up to the observatory, I noticed how that little dingy place was a total euphony of light. Euphony, I mean it. I couldn’t let the place go unphotographed. No sane person is going to waste beautiful light. It has to be put to use. I told Sojo later in the afternoon that the next time the sun comes out (who knows when), I am dragging her up to the observatory to photograph her (it’s only a stairway away!).

On a sidenote, as soon as I can convert my RAW files into JPEGs, I will post my portrait series up here (one is of Sojo; the other is of my friend Jasper).

It does not have to be repeated (though I obviously do so, again and again) that my weakness is the sky.

I love clouds (especially when contrasted against a differently colored sky. Grey against grey rarely produces poignant feelings).

Blue skies are always a bit puckish.

As an objective **location** (without any such light to beautify), the observatory is really a sad, dinky little dump.

I am always intent on photographing people. But I had no person to photograph in this case, and I had to take advantage of the glorious light, so, as a result, my first series of self-portraits were produced (looking at these photos does have the effect of making me feel self-conscious; I am far from an adequate model; excuse any dampened effect in these pictures which I can attribute to myself).

All that being said and seen, please come visit me!!!!

Hahah I am glad you have found it! Though, my brain mash is nothing compared to the photographic beauty that is your blog. Also, from what I’ve read, you are enjoying Harvard and I am happy for you! Keeeep posting.

Wow i really like the picture of the two sides of the building with the light glare through the window. Exhilarating.

Also, i bet you wouldn’t notice light that much if you didn’t have a camera.

Love the shot with the single chair alone. Great shadow play. Would be a great pic to pay around with in PS… intensify the shadow treatment and black and white the photo while keeping the chair in color.
