Rainbows in the Dark – 7/8/08

(All of these pictures were taken with my point-and-shoot… should have brought my rebel, but did not, sadly)

Tuesday night Em & I went to go see Tilly & the Wall at Great American Music Hall. It was my first time driving fully into the city (Usually it’s just to Millbrae and then the BART). We found our way okay, luckily.

Wasn’t too crowded.

I zoomed in too much.

The first band was called LoveLikeFire, a local band from San Francisco. An Asian lead singer (who had the highest cheekbones ever – amazing bone structure – and wore an awesome purple top) and three other guys. Was not really diggin’ the whole blast of empty, vacuous noise in which neither vocals nor individual instruments could be heard at all.

They were photogenic though. Which doesn’t really make a difference, because I was pretty bummed after their set that I had to stand through 40 minutes of bland, loud sounds.

The second band was Loquat. Sounds like kumquat, but apparently loquat is a fruit too. Not as photogenic as LoveLikeFire, but musically – so much better. The lead singer had an amazing voice that totally blew me out of the water. It had that kind of tugging but still ethereal and effortless quality to it. Loved it. Loquat in general wasn’t absolutely magnificent, but I think enjoyed listening to them.

Between Loquat and Tilly and the Wall’s set, balloons were thrown out. And we blew them up.

It was basically a balloon fiesta in the house.

Tilly set up all pretty. I’m all for metallic, sequiny curtains, the color white, scattered balloons, and massive alphabet letters.

Tilly and the Wall came out with a boom, all smiles and energy. Is Kianna not wearing the most amazing get-up ever? (I want her top!)

Their set was so fun and enchanting, vivacious and vibrant. Dancing along was great. Made me want to tap dance as well.

I took this video, but the sound quality is horrible. All you hear is buzzing and distortion. You cannot hear their pretty voices. So what you might want to do is turn the sound off and just soak in the amazing energy of it all.

Watch 10 seconds of fabulous tapping!

Awesome shoes.

Chilling out … for a total of one song.

How this woman pulls herself together amazes me.

I loved the coordinated movements. So great. (You never see that kind of stuff anymore at concerts… musicians are too cool for dancing!)

Love the flowers on the microphone stand.

One of my favorite pictures from the set. Every time I saw the tap dancer I smiled really big because she smiled really big.

Yes, San Francisco does love Tilly and the Wall. I enjoyed the show thoroughly.

After picking up a coffee & OJ from a nearby 24-hr mart, we headed home. 280 at night is pretty disorienting. There were more than few moments when I felt like I was in a trance, or in a race car video game. Having to follow endless white dotted lines with tired eyes is neither fun nor easy, for a whole hour. I sang along to Coldplay the entire way to keep myself awake. That, and I kept twitching from the coffee.
